Tobias Orthen works as a research associate at FAW/n in Ulm and has recently handed in his PhD thesis at the University of Ulm. His research focuses on the role rich top emitters and the private sector can play in solving the climate problem and promoting sustainable development, combining aspects of global justice, environmental economics, questions of inequality and incentives to act.

At FAW/n, he has been involved in supporting the Development and Climate Alliance of the German  Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (www.allianz-entwicklung-klima.de). Recently, he has been working on the transition of the global energy system towards climate neutrality. This work includes elements such as solar energy from the world’s deserts, green hydrogen, green methanol/methane and carbon capture and usage to make a circular carbon economy work (www.global-energy-solutions.org). With colleagues, he has been organizing and conducting the Ambassador Academy – Development, Climate and Population at FAW/n and University of Ulm for students and young professionals since 2018.

Tobias Orthen studied physics in Kiel, Göttingen and Tokyo and spent an extended period at CERN in Geneva before starting his PhD in economics in Ulm. In 2016, he was awarded the Science Award of Lower Saxony (students category) as well as the Foundation Board Award of Göttingen University. While studying, he organized public events on the topics of globalization, sustainability, climate, global justice, world domestic politics and was accepted into the Association of German Scientists as a result in 2013.
